WELCOME TO DERBY SOAP OPERA
“QUAD has always been ambitious when it comes to giving Derby a voice in the arts and now everyone in the city is being invited to join its biggest project yet. A movie about Derby, made here, by the people of the city is sure to be a landmark project that will fire imaginations in 2012″

ABOUT DERBY SOAP OPERA
Come and be part of Derby Soap Opera, one of the world’s largest and most ambitious mass participation film projects that will be written, filmed and performed by the people of Derby. Derby Soap Opera will be a 40-minute film coordinated by QUAD and led by world renowned film maker and artist Marinella Senatore, filmed in May and July and screened at Derby Feste in September. We need every single person in Derby: anyone can get involved!
Since March Marinella Senatore has, with the aid of many assistants and volunteers, led workshops at QUAD and Deda to teach Derby residents the basic elements of film making, acting, dancing and script writing. Workshop participants, drawn from members of the public and local groups, have fashioned a script that is about the people of Derby, and the life of the city itself. As the month of May progresses, Marinella will lead local people in filming the script in a purpose built film set at QUAD, and in locations across the city.
The QUAD film set will be available for the public to view from the 12th of May, and also for any local groups to book and use as their own film set (complete with on-site filming equipment) to make a film about Derby that they can then upload to our dedicated website. For more information on how to book email: email@example.com.
Alongside the film set, in the QUAD gallery, there is an interactive resource area. This section of the gallery includes a recording station, designed by QUAD artists in residence Brendan Oliver and Brendan Randall (Floating Point Digital) where you can record your short film about you and Derby. Also in this area there will be a place to make a prop or costume, and view images from Derby Soap Opera workshops.
Marinella Senatore is a contemporary artist and Director of Photography who studied under the highly influential Giuseppe Rotunno, who illuminated the films of Federico Fellini, Luchino Visconti and Bob Fosse. Senatore currently lives and works in Berlin.
Marinella Senatore’s films are created with whole communities who work with her to create their own project. The films that she makes highlight the importance of collaboration and the exchange of ideas within the creative process.
